Safety

Tips for a worry-free trip

Buenos Aires is safe for visitors in the areas they usually go to. The most common problem is petty theft: with a little care, you will have no trouble.

📍 Where to take extra care

  • La Boca: stay around Caminito and La Bombonera, and leave before dark. Do not wander into the surrounding streets.
  • Retiro and Constitución: around the railway stations, especially at night.
  • San Telmo and Microcentro at night: some streets are deserted. Take a taxi or Uber.
  • Underground and buses at rush hour: wear your backpack on your front and keep your phone out of sight.

🎭 Common scams

The "stain" trick

Someone splashes your clothes (with mustard or a liquid) and an accomplice offers to help clean it while robbing you. Refuse the help and walk away.

Fake notes

You may be given fake notes in your change, especially on the street and in some taxis. Do not change money with the touts on Calle Florida, and check large notes.

Phone snatching

The most common theft: on terraces, in the street or from a passing motorbike. Do not leave your phone on the table, and avoid using it at the kerbside.

🌙 At night

  • Use Uber, Cabify, DiDi or radio taxis to get back to your accommodation.
  • Keep jewellery and cameras out of sight and do not carry much cash.
  • In bars and clubs, keep an eye on your drink.

📞 Emergency numbers

  • Emergencies (police, fire, ambulance): 911
  • Medical emergencies (SAME): 107
⚠️ If your passport is stolen, report it at a police station and contact your consulate in Buenos Aires for a travel document.
💡 GuideMapp tip: carry only the day's money and one card, and leave your passport and everything else in the safe at your accommodation. A photo of your passport on your phone is usually enough as ID.
