What to do

Must-do activities

Prague is one of Europe's best-preserved historic cities: a thousand years of architecture, from Gothic to Cubist, in a centre you can cover on foot. Here are the must-sees, plus a few places many visitors miss.

⭐ Must-sees

Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock 🕰️

Old Town Hall Tower: CZK 350 (≈ €14.40)

Prague's most beautiful square, with the Church of Our Lady before Týn and the Astronomical Clock of 1410, which sets its procession of apostles in motion on the hour, from 9:00 to 23:00. Climb the Old Town Hall Tower for a bird's-eye view of the square.

Charles Bridge 🌉

Free · Old Town Bridge Tower: CZK 190 (≈ €7.80)

This 14th-century Gothic stone bridge, lined with 30 Baroque statues, links the Old Town with Malá Strana. Cross at sunrise to see it empty, and climb the Old Town Bridge Tower for the best view of the bridge with the Castle behind it.

Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral 🏰

Main circuit: CZK 450 (≈ €18.50) · courtyards and gardens are free

The largest castle complex in the world: St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane. Tickets are valid for two days. Arrive early: the security checks at the entrance cause queues.

Malá Strana ⛪

The Baroque quarter below the Castle: St Nicholas Church, the John Lennon Wall, Kampa Island and hidden gardens. Wander its streets on your way down from the Castle.

Jewish Quarter (Josefov) ✡️

Jewish Museum: CZK 600 (≈ €24.70), valid for three days · closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays

The Pinkas, Spanish, Maisel and Klausen synagogues, and the Old Jewish Cemetery, with headstones piled up over centuries. The Old-New Synagogue, Europe's oldest working synagogue, has a separate ticket.

Petřín Hill 🌿

Lookout tower: CZK 250 (≈ €10.30)

A large park with views over the red rooftops, a rose garden, a mirror maze and a lookout tower inspired by the Eiffel Tower. Ride the funicular up and walk down to Malá Strana.

Wenceslas Square and the National Museum 🏛️

More boulevard than square, it has been the stage for the great moments of Czech history, from the Prague Spring to the Velvet Revolution. The National Museum building closes off the top end.

Vyšehrad 🏯

Free to enter the grounds

Prague's other fortress, on a rock above the river, with the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, the cemetery where Dvořák and Mucha are buried, and views of the Vltava with hardly any tourists.

💎 Lesser-known gems

Strahov Monastery Library 📚

Two Baroque library halls with painted ceilings, among the most beautiful in the world. It's a 10-minute walk from the Castle.

Wallenstein Garden 🦚

A free Baroque garden with peacocks and a dripstone grotto, hidden behind a wall in Malá Strana. Open April to October.

Letná 🍺

The park above the river with the best panorama of the bridges, and a beer garden where locals gather on summer evenings.

Náplavka market 🥖

On Saturday mornings, the riverside promenade in the New Town fills with stalls from local producers, street food and coffee.

David Černý's sculptures 🗿

The upside-down horse in the Lucerna arcade, the rotating head of Kafka next to the Quadrio shopping centre, and the giant babies crawling up the Žižkov TV Tower.

Dancing House 💃

Frank Gehry's riverside building that looks like a couple dancing. Its rooftop bar has views of the Castle.

💡 GuideMapp tip: do the Castle from the top down. Take tram 22 up to Pražský hrad, look around, then walk down through Malá Strana to Charles Bridge. You'll skip the climb and the route flows perfectly.
