Getting around the city
Central Porto is walkable, but the hills are real. Combine walking with the metro and, to climb up from the river, the funicular.
🎟️ The Andante card
Porto's transport card works on the metro, STCP buses and suburban trains. The blue card costs €0.60 and you top it up at metro machines.
| Ticket | Price | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Z2 | €1.40 | Around the city |
| Z4 | €2.30 | Airport |
| Andante Tour 1 | €7.75 | 24 h unlimited |
| Andante Tour 3 | €16.55 | 72 h unlimited |
A Z2 ticket lets you transfer within 1 hour. Andante Tour passes cover the whole network: metro, bus and suburban train.
🚇 Metro
Six lines, much of them above ground, with Trindade as the main interchange. For visitors, the key ones are line E (airport) and line D (yellow), which crosses the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge to Gaia.
🚋 Heritage trams
- Line 1: from Ribeira (Infante) to Foz along the river. The prettiest ride.
- Line 22: a loop through the centre (Carmo – Batalha). Back in service since summer 2026.
- Line 18: links Massarelos and Carmo.
On-board ticket: €6 (€3.50 for children aged 4–12), by card or MB Way. Think of them as a ride, not as transport: no rush.
🚡 Skipping the hills
- Funicular dos Guindais: from Ribeira up to Batalha in 2 minutes. €4 one way.
- Gaia cable car: from the river up to Jardim do Morro, with spectacular views. €7 one way or €10 return.
- Uber and Bolt: cheap for short hops, about €5–10 within the city.
