Prices, money and useful tips
Porto is still one of the most affordable cities in Western Europe, and a few tricks make it even cheaper.
🆓 The best things are free
- Crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge on the upper deck, and the Serra do Pilar viewpoint.
- The tiles at São Bento and Capela das Almas.
- The Crystal Palace Gardens and Miradouro da Vitória.
- Strolling through Ribeira and along the sea at Foz.
- Free walking tours: you only pay the tip you choose.
🍽️ Eating well for less
- Look for the prato do dia (dish of the day) at lunchtime: approx. €8–12 in local taverns, sometimes with a drink and coffee.
- A bifana (pork sandwich) and a beer costs around €4–6.
- Eat in Bonfim or Cedofeita: the same dishes as in Ribeira for a lot less.
- The bread, olives or cheese placed on your table (couvert) are charged if you touch them. If you don't want them, ask for them to be taken away.
🧾 Other tricks
- Transport: walk as much as you can and load single Z2 trips. The Andante Tour only pays off if you take many rides.
- Lello: the ticket price is deducted if you buy a book, so the souvenir is effectively free.
- Cruise: board in Gaia instead of Ribeira and save €2 per person.
- Water: tap water is safe. Bring a reusable bottle.
💡 GuideMapp tip: the Porto.CARD Walker (from €7.50 a day) gives free entry or discounts at museums, but it no longer includes transport. Do the maths first: with two or three paid visits a day it can pay off; otherwise, just pay for each ticket.
