Getting around Venice is unlike anywhere else: it's all canals and car-free streets. Public transport is built around the water, and it's an easy way to explore the city.
Ways to get around
Vaporetti (water buses) and buses
Vaporetti are the backbone of public transport in Venice, linking the main islands and districts. There are also ordinary buses on the Lido and in Mestre.
- Flexibility: lots of routes and frequent services.
- Cost: a single ticket (valid for 75 minutes) costs €9.50.
- Convenience: they stop near most of the sights.
Water taxis and taxis
Water taxis are private motorboats: direct and fast, but pricey. Ordinary taxis only run from Piazzale Roma and on the mainland.
- Privacy: ideal for groups or lots of luggage.
- Water taxi: about €60–120 per trip within the city.
- Taxi: similar to other cities, around €15–30 for a short trip.
Walking (and cycling)
Walking is the most authentic and rewarding way to see Venice, and it's how you stumble across its hidden corners. Bikes are banned in the historic centre and only allowed on the Lido and the mainland.

- Cost: free – and good for you.
- Downside: it can be tiring, especially with luggage.

Our tip: the easiest way to pay
If you'll only take the vaporetto once or twice, single tickets are enough; if you're exploring properly, a pass quickly pays for itself. Even easier: just tap your contactless bank card or phone on the validator at the stop. Each journey is charged at €9.50, and if you travel a lot, the system automatically caps what you pay at the price of the cheapest pass.
