Where you sleep in Venice changes your trip quite a bit: the vibe, what you spend, and how much you walk every day. The city is divided into sestieri (its historic neighborhoods) and each has its own vibe. Here I'll tell you which ones work best depending on what you're looking for, plus an option on the mainland in case you want to save.
The neighborhoods, one by one
📍 San Marco
It's the center of everything: the Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and the most famous square in the city. If your dream is to look out the window and already be in a Venetian postcard, this is it. Of course, you pay for it.
Prices: very high.

- ✅ Atmosphere and life at any time.

🎭 Cannaregio
My recommendation for most. You have the train station nearby, more reasonable prices, and bacari (Venetian tapas bars) where you see real local life. You feel Venice without paying the San Marco premium.
Prices: medium-high.

- ✅ Authentic bacari and neighborhood vibe.
- ❌ The area next to the station can be noisy.

🎨 Dorsoduro
The artistic and university neighborhood, with a bohemian and quiet air. Here are the Accademia Gallery and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and at night it has a charming scene without getting overcrowded.
Prices: medium-high.

- ✅ Charming nightlife, not a noisy party.
- ❌ Somewhat away from San Marco (more walking or vaporetto).
- ❌ Few really cheap options.
🚆 Mestre (on the mainland)
It's not the postcard Venice, but it's the smart move if you're on a tight budget. It's on the mainland, the hotels are newer and much cheaper, and you reach the center of Venice in 10-15 minutes by train or tram, with very frequent departures.
Prices: cheap.

- ❌ You don't sleep "inside" Venice: you miss the magic of the night.

A tip before booking
Book well in advance, especially in high season (summer, Carnival, and the Biennale): Venice fills up and good prices fly. And remember the golden rule: the closer to San Marco, the more you pay. Sometimes staying a little further away (Cannaregio, Dorsoduro, or Mestre) gets you a better hotel for the same money.
