When to visit

Best time, weather and events

Milan changes its look and mood with every season, from lively summers to elegant winters. Here's how to choose the best time for your trip.

When to go

The sweet spot 🌟

When: April–May and September–October.

The best time to visit. The weather is mild – perfect for walking around the city or enjoying an aperitivo outdoors – and the calendar is full of cultural and fashion events.

  • Pros ✅: ideal weather, a buzzing atmosphere, plenty of events, terraces at their best.
  • Cons ❌: more visitors, and higher prices for flights and accommodation.

The budget option 💸

When: January–February (outside Carnival) and late July–August.

If you're travelling on a tight budget, these months are your friend. Fewer tourists means better deals on hotels and flights – just be ready for winter cold or summer heat.

  • Pros ✅: big savings on flights and hotels, shorter queues in winter, seasonal sales (January and July).
  • Cons ❌: cold, damp winters or very hot summers, and some shops and restaurants close for the August holidays (around Ferragosto, 15 August).

Prices through the year

A quick guide to how prices and crowds change by season.

Season Hotels (per night) Queues
Low 📉 💵 €80–150 🎟️ Short
Mid 📊 💵 €120–200 🎟️ Moderate
High 📈 💵 €180–350+ 🎟️ Long

Events not to miss

  • Milan Fashion Week 📅 (February and September): the world's fashion capital at its peak, as designers present their new collections.
  • Salone del Mobile 📅 (April): the world's most important furniture and design fair.
  • Milan Design Week 📅 (April): running alongside the Salone, it turns the whole city into an interactive design exhibition.
  • Carnevale Ambrosiano 📅 (February/March): Milan's own version of Carnival, which lasts a few days longer than in the rest of Italy.
  • Estate Sforzesca 📅 (June–August): open-air concerts and shows in the courtyards of the Castello Sforzesco.
  • Sant'Ambrogio and Oh Bej! Oh Bej! 📅 (7 December): the feast of Milan's patron saint, with a historic and charming Christmas market.

Expert tip 💡

What to pack: comfortable walking shoes! Milan is best explored on foot. And dress in layers – the weather can be unpredictable.

The secret 🤫: if you want to see Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, book months in advance. Tickets sell out incredibly fast.

We hope this helps you plan the perfect trip to Milan! 👋
