Where to stay

Recommended areas and tips

Central Athens is compact, and almost everything that matters is within walking distance of the Acropolis. Choose your neighbourhood to suit your travel style: waking up to a view of the Parthenon is not the same as waking up to Psyrri's nightlife under your window.

🏘️ The neighbourhoods, one by one

🏛️ Plaka

Price: €€€ · Ideal for a first visit

The oldest and most charming area, right below the Acropolis. Cobbled lanes, bougainvillea and tavernas with chequered tablecloths.

  • ✅ Walk to the Acropolis, the Agora and the museums
  • ✅ Lovely by day and by night
  • ❌ Very touristy and pricier
  • ❌ Few budget options

🌳 Koukaki

Price: €€ · Our favourite

South of the Acropolis, next to the Acropolis Museum and Philopappos Hill. It has a real neighbourhood feel, cafés with terraces and plenty of flats to rent.

  • ✅ 5–10 minutes' walk from the Acropolis
  • ✅ Local atmosphere and good value
  • ✅ Akropoli and Syngrou-Fix metro stations
  • ❌ Quieter nightlife than the centre

🥳 Monastiraki and Psyrri

Price: €€ · For those who want a buzz

The liveliest part of the centre: a flea market, rooftop bars with Acropolis views, street art and late-night bars.

  • ✅ Excellent connections (Monastiraki metro, lines 1 and 3)
  • ✅ Plenty of places to eat and go out
  • ❌ Noisy at night, especially in Psyrri
  • ❌ Some streets look a bit run-down

🛍️ Kolonaki

Price: €€€€ · Smart and quiet

Athens' upmarket district on the slopes of Mount Lycabettus: designer shops, galleries and cafés made for people-watching.

  • ✅ Safe, quiet and stylish
  • ✅ Close to Lycabettus and the Benaki Museum
  • ❌ The most expensive
  • ❌ 20–25 minutes' walk from the Acropolis

🎸 Exarchia

Price: € · Alternative

The student, anti-establishment district: bookshops, graffiti, cheap bars and lots of life. Very authentic, but not for everyone.

  • ✅ Cheap and not touristy at all
  • ✅ Close to the National Archaeological Museum
  • ❌ Grittier, with occasional protests
  • ❌ Noisy at night

🔎 Other options

  • Syntagma: very central and handy if you arrive by airport metro or bus. More offices than neighbourhood.
  • Pangrati: residential, next to the Panathenaic Stadium, with good tavernas and lower prices.
  • Omonia and Metaxourgeio: there are very cheap hotels, but some streets don't feel great at night. Check the exact location before you book.
💡 GuideMapp tip: before you book, check the real distance to a metro station and whether the place has air conditioning. In July, without it, not even Morpheus can get you to sleep.
